Inclusive Science Education

Do you struggle with science terminology? We do too!! When teaching virtually during Fall 2020 to Year 2 medical students, I felt an obligation to include the novel SARS-CoV2, causative agent of COVID-19, in the 7 lectures series for respiratory infections. The other professors said they weren't teaching COVID as "It's not on the test". To help my students, I worked with a graphic designer to create a comprehensive "mind-map" of human infectious diseases with consistent color coding, size ranking and spatial patterns to create The Atlas. The interactive PPT guide provides a literal map of how to deduce a diagnosis based on clinical presentation, epidemiological clues and lab values.
